Formed in 2001, Denmead Training Band welcomes anyone with an interest in playing or learning to play a brass instrument. Over the years the band has gradually built up a regular membership of both children and adult learners.

Sarah Martin BA (Hons) PGCE, the Musical Director, actively encourages and inspires the band members to work hard to improve their playing. In 2006 Sarah's dedication was recognised when she won an award in the ‵Best Volunteer′ category of the We Can Do It awards run by The Portsmouth News.

Each week Sarah and her team of helpers from the main band, help the members to learn to play new and more challenging pieces of music and give them guidance not only on how to produce a good sound but also how to interpret the written work. Several members of the training band have progressed to the main band, and also represent youth bands at county and national levels.

The band entered their very first competition in 2007, competing against other training bands from the South West of England. They were awarded first prize. This success was followed up in 2010 at the Portsmouth Music Festival with the band winning the "Dengri" Cup.

Apart from the normal weekly rehearsals the Training band regularly take part in joint rehearsals with the main band, and are increasingly in demand to perform at local events.
